Sardinia as the crossroads of the Mediterranean peoples. Not a slogan from modern tourism, but the "reality" of ancient myth, as we shall see.
We mentioned to the natives, from who knows where. Original inhabitants of Sardinia, or perhaps generic label to indicate "who was already telling the story of a new migration."
Today we start naming names and surnames, although only of peoples and, yet, of heroes. Or maybe yes. In
rigid geographical completely random, we'll talk about immigration that reached the Sardinia from north.
Pliny the Elder tells us that the most famous people of the Sardinia (excluding Roman Punic and Phoenician settlers) were the Ilies, the Balari and courses. And from this side.
The island of Corsica is not very far from Sardinia. On the contrary: there is practically attacked. Corsica was named by its inhabitants (the ligues, Pausanias tells us), while the Greeks called Cirne. For Paul Deacon (historic eighth century AD) was named Corsica Corso, one of his captains, while Sardinia by a son of Hercules.
The fact is that (yet Pausanias dixit) of the courses moved to Sardinia and occupied a portion of the island mountains. It is unclear why the author says that these immigrants received by the natives as Course: Not if they are brought home by themselves?
ligues But who were these? The name is greek for a people which the Romans called Ligures, the Ligurian, settled on the shores of the Ligurian Sea in an area that from Liguria (vivid imagination!) Reaching up to the Rhone. Even today we have been discussing whether a pre-Indo-European population, or rather akin to the Celts and Umbria.
Diodorus, another tipaccio we have already known and often end up on this post, tells us that the merchants were the Ligurian sailors bold. On boats, according to the Sicilians, were worse and a raft of boats that had almost nothing to address in the storms of the amazing Sea of \u200b\u200bSardinia and that of Libya.
Zonaras, a medieval Byzantine historian, tells us that during the uprising against the Romans in Sardinia, in addition to courses rose several times even the Ligurian.
At this point we have to imagine that, despite the poor boats, the Ligurian had allocated in Sardinia. The logic is: if you sailed to Libya, Sardinia was a staging point forced between their points of departure and arrival. If we had called to Corsica, perhaps those descended from their courses migrated to Sardinia. In the narrative of the revolt
Zonaras gives us one of the most tragic pages of Sardinian history: as the Roman raids did not get almost nothing because the rebels were hiding in forests and caves, the Roman general Pomponio was made to send sniffer dogs from Rome. Equipped with these "weapons" the Romans managed to track down opponents, killing many and forcing the survivors to surrender.
So far these two peoples.
But a legendary name in there we can already give this post: is that of Force, one of the "Old Sea" of Greek mythology, along with ocean, to Nereus and Proteus.
second serves, in what a follower of Evemero, King of Corsica and Sardinia was once just Force. We do not know if Servius meant that both islands were united, or simply that Forco was the king of the courses allocated on both sides of the Strait of Bonifacio. However
Forco Atlas faced in battle and his army was a disaster. The king of course it was defeated at sea and on land.
Now Forco disappeared, and his friends thought it was now a sea goddess.
become a king god: not bad for a people whom the Romans (quoting a great poet and singer, he immigrated to Liguria Sardinia) hunted game like it was!
